Emily Metcalf(1957-2008) Was the first professional cellist to study improvisation with David Darling. She was among the pioneer group of musicians whose collaborative experiences shaped Music for People’s training programs in the 1980s.

She is remembered as a powerful and sensitive player and a kind and compassionate mentor to others. Her personal example of facing cancer with grace and courage inspired the creation of a scholarship fund in her name. The Emily Metcalf Scholarship Fund helps deserving candidates attend Music for People events, and through them it brings Music for People’s message to new places and populations.

Emily was a cellist with the Hartford Symphony, a Music Together director, a studio cellist on the recordings of Heather Forest, David Roth, and others, a devoted mother and spouse, and a kind soul with an enormous heart.
