Day of Improvisation and Community-Created Concert
Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017
Workshop 10:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; Concert at 7:00 p.m.
Onondaga Community College, Syracuse, NY
Treat yourself to a day of creative music-making with Music for People and the New Leaf Ensemble. Join us for playful and inspiring workshops with an approach to improvisation that is inviting and artistically rich for musicians from diverse backgrounds. Whether you are a professional musician, teacher, student, or amateur, you will have a chance to recharge and refresh your own musical spirit while stepping into a community that honors deep listening and connection. We will include elective sessions on how to use improvisation in private lessons, in the classroom, in concert performances, and more.
In the evening, as a community we will create an improvised concert inspired by images and sounds of water in Central New York.
Hosted by the New Leaf Ensemble, Syracuse’s improvising chamber music group, Alina Plourde, Steve Rosenfeld, and Jessica King, with guest facilitators Alison Weiner, Tim Simmons, and Todd Rogers. The workshop and concert take place in the music department (Academic II building) at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY.
This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.
Because it is grant-supported, this event is offered free of charge. Lunch and dinner will be available for purchase at the on-campus Gordon Student Center or local restaurants, or you may pack your own.
For out-of-town participants, we recommend the following Syracuse hotels as being conveniently located about a 15-minute drive from the OCC campus: The Genesee Grande Hotel, the Parkview Hotel, or the Crowne Plaza.
