Julie Cook

Location: Connecticut

Julie Cook’s music journey has included studying and playing the piano for the major part of her life. She took private instruction at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford as well as studying with several freelance teachers. Since 1983, her studio, Julie’s Piano Workshop, in Newtown and Woodbury, Connecticut, has been the main vehicle through which she has shared her love of music. Since completing Music for People's Leadership Program, she has incorporated improvisation techniques into her private teaching with joyful results. She believes that teaching note-reading and good technique is wholly compatible with improvising.

Julie is a facilitator of a variety of improvisation workshops for musicians and non-musicians, including The Healing Voice, Rhythms of Life, and Music Appreciation with a Difference. She is also available to give talks and workshops to piano teacher groups that are interested in transforming the way they teach through improvisation.

Another of Julie's interests is writing poetry and fiction, and workshop participants are sometimes asked to use poetry with their music. She has written a novel, Beneath the Music, the story of a frustrated prodigy who finally finds his authentic music.

Julie invites anyone wishing to engage her services to contact her at 203-266-4134 or juliemcook@earthlink.net
